These crazy days

As I sit here, fingers hovering over the keyboard, I wonder where to begin. Is this an immune system issue? A mental health issue? A global control issue? An environmental issue? …All these questions and more are buzzing through my mind and I expect they are for you too. So, here goes, I shall give my tuppence and musings on the pandemic and where I hope we will go as a world afterwards.

How did we get here?

It feels quite odd to have been told by the Government to stay at home. There is a part of me that wants to stamp my foot and say ‘No!’ like my children often do, and another part that says, ‘Yes, absolutely, whatever you think is best for the greater good.’ What camp do you lie in? Have you considered why you feel that way?
Seeing countries like Sweden carry on as if nothing is happening is a little galling - and facts flying around the internet that show that the seasonal flu has already taken the lives of five times as many people around the world as coronavirus in the same amount of time is equally difficult to swallow. Is this virus really so dangerous that we need to stop leaving our homes and limit our daily lives? Really?

Well, in my opinion, I don’t want to be the twat who finds out the hard way, or discovers that their actions led to the deaths of other people just because I couldn’t go surfing, or to the cinema when I wanted to. It is clearly extremely contagious, and many people are suffering from the effects. It seems a pretty harsh way to go if you ask me, so if I can do my bit and “stay home” then I will, even if I am not afraid of it myself, per se.

What will we do now?

What are you doing with your days now? Are you avidly tidying the garden, clearing out the cupboard under the stairs and baking new dishes? Or are you lying on the sofa and moaning about the fact you can’t go out and buy Doritos? GET UP if you are that lazy person. Have some initiative and start a project. If you have children, you’ll already have fallen into a routine that involves crafting, exercise, TV time, quiet time and plenty of snack breaks. WELL DONE YOU ARE DOING GREAT! Hopefully it’ll all be over within a few weeks and the rules will begin to bend. We will be out and about soon enough and this whole shebang will be a part of history. (That’s what I’m telling myself at least, while simultaneously drinking coffee, looking up holidays and preventing my children from causing each other GBH.)

What can we hope to gain from this?

I hope that we learn that sometimes it is better to be safe than sorry. I think that most house prices will go up because everyone will have fixed all their problems and gone at the DIY with gay abandon. I expect plenty of people will have Marie Kondo’d their cupboards and I hope donated plenty of unwanted to charity. We should streamline our lives, lifestyles and worked out the important things in life.

I aim to continue almost as normal, except with plenty more take away coffee to make up for lost time!! I really miss my mum friends who are such a support. I also REALLY hope that people will take stock of their health and start to make positive changes to their lives - eating more healthily, caring for their environment, using natural cleaning products and keeping fit. C’mon England. We can do this.
